“The immortals know no care, yet the lot they spin for man is full of sorrow; on the floor of Zeus’ palace there stand two urns, the one filled with evil gifts, and the other with good ones. He for whom Zeus the lord of thunder mixes the gifts he sends, will meet now with good and now with evil fortune; but he to whom Zeus sends none but evil gifts will be pointed at by the finger of scorn, the hand of famine will pursue him to the ends of the world, and he will go up and down the face of the earth, respected neither by gods nor men” Homer
just another day in the average life
I watch him wander across the meadow to the forest
The daily walk he never takes the same way twice
Where does he go I wonder
Sipping my coffee in the morning light
He returns, he always comes back
It is his way
But I fear for him
Alone in the world
Too much fear at times.
He wakes me often in the hot summer nights
And sits by my side
My Dog Star
I put my arm around him
The lightning bugs everywhere
My god, I have never seen that many since.
That was our last summer
That was my gift, my beautiful magical gift.
You woke me up nudging me,
Unusual for you to do but I followed
For that I am grateful,
And you led me out,
To see the beauty in the night air.
Autumn and I lean out the window
Painting the trim two stories up
I see him
There is something there
A gift to his senses
Back and forth he runs
Excitement one each step
And comes round shaking ferociously
A brown lump
Throwing it, biting
I yell no, stop and he thinks he has done a bad thing.
He had been happy and now he sits sad
A groundhog or woodchuck
What does it matter now.
It was his first kill
I pet him and tell him I am proud
Though I feel sad
And the sun shines on his gift
As I shovel it into a bag.
He wags his tail
A gift for me
Pandora bracelet from my love
With a charm to start.
For my next addition
A gopher and a dog
Side by each
Charms of my life
On a wire.
Time flies by
The everyday events we take for granted
The way you looked at me
Your expression filled with love
And I could see your eyes cloud with the passing of the years
But we had time right? Yes, we must have more.
Your legs grew weak
Was it weeks, months I cannot remember
But I remember the way your eyes looked into mine
As I kissed you goodbye
Not realizing it would be the last time,
If I had known I would have stayed.
Your breath fading out the night after I left
Your breath no longer here
You are in the wind
My precious gift,
I sit out alone now in summer
As the sleepless nights take me out from under
A warm blanket to the stars above.
Can you see me?
Can you hear the words I speak when I cannot cry,
We all receive gifts, good and bad.
And I am afraid to ask
