Our lives-
pickup stick games
from youth to death
sliding out so carefully
each thought from beneath the balance,
never knowing if one jolt,
one movement affects the next thought
and so on
as we pull each one with carefulness and agility,
observing what is to come next
and then beyond
weighing our choices
as we look from each angle
making our decision
so thoughtfully.
How did they become this jumble,
for this is how the game is played
they are not Lincoln logs waiting to be built,
a pile of shapes and varying sizes,
these slim fragments of color are all the same
as we are all the same
we try in earnest fashion to win each game,
sometimes succeeding
sometimes moving and tipping the scales
this way or the other,
yet we keep going as if there is no other way.
Until the last stick is picked up
we pay close attention to each detail,
if we do this, what may happen?
Not until the game is over,
do we finally realize it was simply a game after all,
it became more fun when we took the risk
and chanced failure to do so,
there was always a do over until there wasn’t.
But if each stick were a person in our lives,
and we kept adding instead of removing
oh what a beautiful shrine we could build,
higher and higher into the sky
we would win every time,
everyone would have a chance or say
and we could live in balance
and harmony
until the end of our days.
Yes we do and yes they have๐

I suppose we have to shoulder some of the responsibility but I guess they’ve leapfrogged us in some ways.

LOL!!! You just put that into perspective! Pick up sticks doesn’t stand a chance with our kids. I agree, they certainly have lost out a bit by never having played these simple, yet complex, games.

Hey beautiful – Well I’m not so sure I want to reflect on that game too much without feeling old Lol!. But yes, it was fun. I checked with my children and they don’t recall ever playing it. They are poorer for it I think. What are they going to pick up sticks for when they came with windows and Apple already installed with all the Apps? ๐

Hey my sweet! I’ve seen them recently at a dollar store. I’m not sure if you have these in SA but they are stores where everything costs $1.00 ๐
I used to love that game ๐

Oh my! For you to liken life to a game of pick-up-sticks is sheer genius! I loved playing that game as a kid. I never realized how often I still play it today…not until you brought it to my attention! Amazing!

Oh – now that I think about it, they used ice cream sticks – the flat plain wooden ones. You know – seeing that picture actually reminds me of the smell of crayons and clay as I recall it in the primary school classroom ( we called it plastocene) – Thanks for the nostalgia and enjoy the rest of your day๐

I haven’t looked for it, was picking up sticks in the yard and it came into mind, had a set as a kid, some 40+ years ago ๐

Yes, I did. Do they still have that game around? I can’t recall my children playing it.

What a lovely analogy and a trip down memory lane. Yeah, if only life wasn’t so calculated. Even taking risks is calculated, I loved your poem!๐น

That’s why me playing Jenga is just like Pick up Sticks, but I love both, and your nostalgic poem brought me a smile too, so it’s only fair.

my hands always shook too much for that game ๐ pick up sticks was more fun, although we spent more time embedding them in the shag carpet and making forts for Barbie ๐
You always get me smiling my friend โค
