Fading into

The night sweeps in with darkest dreams

in hazy images of places unseen

by a memory which cannot recall

much of anything at all.

What thoughts did Poe on writing find

through twisted years and phantom skies

where birds flew once then disappeared

and clocks that tick for a deafened ear.

We frame the dark in lighter hues,

set ghostly candles in musty rooms

whose flickering adds to the coming night

where a moon will shine on the endless fight

of here and there now gone from view

drifting into shadows as they do,

the whispers linger on humid air

as the moment finds in a new despair

to save the soul through words and hope

whilst empty lies the hangman rope

we tear it down and burn the threads

a funeral pyre for a dream that’s dead.

Feeling a bit gothic (in a good way if there is one) for some reason, ghostly image found on internet and upon seeing it, this poem appeared….

  1. Snakes freak me out a bit, but the ones we have here, I let live (southern black racers) because if we have those, we won’t have the nasties (rattlers and moccasins)…I watch him climb the lattice and move through the jasmine….I’m fine as long as I know where he is πŸ™‚ because I won’t be there near him πŸ™‚

  2. Telltale Heart and The Raven are ones I liked in high school! My Dad used to read us Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! The one with the snake coming down a rope was eerie. Others for me to think!!

  3. the light comes so easily most days, but when the darkness rises….man, what a tale to spin….leaving you wondering what the heck is going on in the mind….the endless battle to squash the dark, but sometimes it makes a fun read ❀

  5. thanks Tre, I’m in a good mood but felt a wave of Halloween cloak me for a bit-I’m not usually one for rhyming poems but this one just sort of fell out of somewhere in the vast cavern of my brain πŸ™‚ the pic was too cool not to write to πŸ™‚
